about

"Caledonian Road" was one of the first things I wrote when I returned to making electronic music in 2014 and came out of improvising using the new generation of software recreations of analog synthesizers. I was using the recreated Yamaha CS-80 by Arturia and therefore was already being nudged along the Vangelis route. I shamelessly used two of its preset sounds for the lead voice, which Vangelis himself was also much in the habit of doing. The basic structure of rising then descending seventh chords felt like an endless journey to me, and so the title evokes an endless road through a Celtic landscape. But it's also a joke - Caledonian Road is a busy artery in North London that I drove many times in my decades of living there. The actual "cover" art is in fact a road in Wales - it's a processed version of a photo I took in Snowdonia in the year 2000.
