about

For the last six years I've been making imitations of my heroes to learn how to make electronic music, usually in the form of short pieces created by setting up sequences and patches in MainStage 3 and playing live-to-disc, creating a single stereo mix of the audio generated in a session. Naturally there's no do-overs or re-takes in this kind of setup, so you can view this as a selection of pieces performed live, albeit without an audience.

After I released the album 1980-81, one of the first works I attempted when I returned to electronic music after a long hiatus, I looked at all these audio files filling up my Mac's storage, and wondered what to do with them. I'd already been posting the better versions to SoundCloud, and I'm very glad of that because my regular fits of unstructured housekeeping had swept away many of the original takes.

In the end I decided to create suites of those pieces, with bridges, presented as unified works, and collated by genre or imitated artist. I have deliberately obfuscated the track names somewhat in an attempt to hide my models, but I do not expect that ruse to endure.
